Two deer hunting seasons ago I shot a really nice 8 point buck from a blind I made out of an old bush on a hill side. After the deer was shot it ran out into a field overgrown with tall grass, so I began to track it. After walking half way through the field I finally spotted the buck. He was walking slow, and I could tell from the trail he had lost a lot of blood.
When I was about 100 yards away from it, I heard a shot. It was another hunter firing at my buck. As soon as he made the shot he went running to the downed deer. I couldn't believe it. He shot the deer, that I already shot and tracked, and put his tag on it. The game warden was called to resolve the issue, and the deer was awarded to the other guy because his shot was the shot that finally dropped the buck.
My tip to you is make sure there are no other hunters in the area before you attempt to track your trophy. I could have easily been shot by the other hunter, and in a situation when another hunter will have the nerve to do such a thing, it could have turned ugly really fast.
